“Training in the method of the social circus for teachers and social workers” 2022
Mini Art Center – Parva Bulgarska Armia 135, 4th floor, Orlandovtsi, Sofia.
Course for social workers, teachers, coaches, artists and students on the topic “Social circus training for teachers and social workers”.
One of the bigger challenges facing policy-makers, educators and those working in fields of community development and social justice is how to engage vulnerable children in meaningful learning that recognises their vulnerability and at the same time respects their rights to an education and enables them to participate fully in the broader society beyond their experiences at school.
These children at the margins of society are often labelled as different. Their behaviour does not always conform to what is expected of them, they find it difficult to engage in academic learning, their friendships often link them in with ‘the wrong crowd’, and they are more likely to come to the attention of police and be engaged in the criminal justice system. Their life experiences have sometimes been traumatic, and they tend to be part of a lower socio-economic ‘class’.

The social circus is an innovative form of work with children and young people, mixing circus art and psycho-social techniques.
The aim is to ensure the social inclusion and development of specific competence of young people at risk. Due to the fact that the activities require perseverance, perseverance and discipline on the one hand, and on the other hand leave a lot of space for creativity and free expression, the social circus empowers participants to use their own “marginality” to present themselves and establish a new type of relationship with society that often rejects them.
The social circus is different from the professional/traditional one in that it attaches importance to the experience of the participants rather than to the result of the experience; goes beyond the aesthetic and entertainment role and emphasizes the establishment of links between participants and the community. In other words – for the social circus the path is no less important than the result and this liberates and inspires.
There are several principles that define the social circus – creating a safe and fun environment; relationship with the community; enabling expression and creativity; cooperation between social work and circus; duration in time; assessment of the needs of the participants; partnership with them.
“Training in the methods of the social circus for teachers and social workers” is a project that will provide quality training for teachers and educators working in the field of social care, education and youth activities in Bulgaria.
Our goal is the development of modern psycho-social practices combined with circus techniques.
The trainings will be held in the Mini Art Center, where we will have the opportunity to test the technology of the social circus in a calm and safe environment and meet colleagues and like-minded people.
The project is funded by the Sofia Municipality program “Europe” 2022, in partnership with Circus Tværs (Denmark)
